Colostrum - Mother Nature’s Gift For All

Colostrum is nature's perfect food. Also called life first food, it is a yellow pre-milk substance secreted from the mammary glands of all female mammals during the first few days after giving birth.

Colostrum has a long history of being used as a natural healer. For over 2000 years, Ayurvedic physicians in India have long known the colostrums properties, and have used it for both physical and spiritual healing.

By the late 18th century, Western medicine started to use colostrum for several purposes, including immune system enhancement and for fighting bacterial infections.

Bovine colostrum was used for immune problems, prior to the discovery of sulfa drugs and antibiotics in the 20th century.

This is because after maturity, we gradually lose the natural immune factors and growth factors in our body. Medical studies in hundreds of published reports worldwide proved that colostrum is possibly the natural supplement known that can deliver the right combination of immune factors and growth factors in a balanced, natural package, and in a form that is bio-available to the human body.

Studies have shown that colostrum isn’t only good for newborns: it can also offer great benefit to adults and even the elderly. As we age, we notice it takes us a little longer to fight off a cold or flu.

Colostrum is rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and two primary components namely immune factors and growth factors.

Other Important Components

Lactorferrin

is an iron-binding protein found on the mucosal surfaces and in the blood serum. It has been shown to play a major role in our body's defense system against diseases and infections. It has the capability to bind iron, antimicrobial activity, anti-fungal, anti-viral and is also an anti oxidant.

Proline-Rich Polypeptide (PRP)

PRP is a powerful immunomodulator, meaning it regulates the activity of immune system. PRP stimulates an under active immune system as well as down-regulate an overactive immune system. PRP can help to fight autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and multiple sclerosis (MS). It also help to reduce inflammation associated with allergies.

Transferrin

is found in the mucosa. It is a plasma protein for iron ion delivery, binds and transports iron. It is also associated with the innate immune system. Thus, it can help creating an environment low in free iron, where few bacteria are able to survive.

Lysozyme

is a type of enzyme that makes it a powerful hydrolyzing agent that is capable in destroying bacteria and viruses on contact.

IMPORTANCE OF NATURAL FATS

First milking colostrum is naturally rich in fats, making up about 20-25% of total solids. Fats serve as the critical transporter (or surrogate) for the powerful growth factor IGF-1. When purchasing colostrum, ensure all its naturally occurring fats are kept intact for the greatest anti-aging benefits.

Unfortunately, most brands of colostrum have most of their fats removed. Removal of the natural fats from colostrum is primarily done for a number of reasons. The main purpose is to artificially elevate the IgG percentage in colostrum, thus making it "appear" to be harvested from the first or earlier collections. Another reason is to hide the rancid odor of poor quality, mishandled, or old colostrum. All else being equal, fat-free colostrum is more shelf stable and offers a longer shelf life. Lastly, fat-free colostrum mixes more easily with and dissolves more quickly in water.

Excessive fat is a concern in our diets, as is cholesterol. Genuine first milking colostrum is very low in cholesterol, containing only 1.9 mg of cholesterol per gram of dried colostrum.
